Throughout the book, Grace describes in detail the type of work she performs, and how she and her fellow coworkers are treated. A theme that more or less dominates the background of the novel is the apparent sexism of the mid-1800s. The women are considered too â€Å"weak† for the â€Å"tougher† jobs that were selected for men.
